Our 10 am Sunday worship services change from week to week and season to season. We are of the Free Church tradition which means that we do not follow creeds or set orders to aspects of our worship and governance. We have developed what we think works well for us.
Our sanctuary has movable pews so we might have the pews facing all one way, in a diamond or a square, depending upon the liturgical needs of the worship service.
We value music that is well prepared and spirit-filled. During the academic year, we enjoy the weekly singing of the UBC Chorale and the monthly contribution of our handbell choirs. From time to time we have vocal or instrumental ensembles and soloists in our worship services. We are thrilled to have a pipe organ, two grand pianos, and a harpsichord in our sanctuary. Among our membership we have people who play cello, clarinet, French horn, guitar, hammer dulcimer, Native American flute, piano, trumpet, trombone, violin and more. Our services usually have the following components:

“Purple” Acts 16:11-15 A Sermon preached by the Rev. Douglas M. Donley May 5, 2013 University Baptist Church Minneapolis, MN
Lydia: a dealer in purple goods; a leader in the early church; a person who commanded respect, from her family, from Paul, from her community. And yet, we hardly know her name. We know a lot about Paul, Silas, Barnabas, Peter. Where are all the songs about Lydia? All we have are these few verses. Like Mary Magdalene, a prominent figure in the Gospels, the only one recorded by all four gospel writers as being present at both the crucifixion and the resurrection, she disappears shortly thereafter.
But we are here because of the missionary work of Mary Magdalene and Priscilla, Aquila and yes, even forgotten Lydia.
She will forever be remembered by the color purple. Alice Walker wrote in The Color Purple, “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it. People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.”
Maybe it’s time to recognize the color purple and all of the women who bless this world.

The UBC Worship Planning Team always looks for creative ways to focus our worship experience.
This year, we decided to enhance our investigation of what it means to be peacemakers in this world. Just to make it interesting, we decided that each Sunday’s service would focus on one word starting with the letter “P”. Click here to see the schedule for the entire year.
